Character: Hunk
Series: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: season 3, episode 4
CRAU?: n/a

History: So basically, Hunk was just steady chillin’ at space school until somebody had to go and convince him that it would be a great idea to sneak out in the middle of the night. Which of course ended up with him and his besties getting abducted by a robo-cat, which lead to aliens, which led to fighting aliens, etc. Read all about it on his character wiki or the series episode list.

Personality: You know that one friend you had as a kid that always took 900 years to convince to go do cool stuff because they were always worried about silly things like breaking your leg when you inevitably fell out of that tree or contracting rabies if you got too close to the weird looking raccoon you found out in the woods behind your uncle’s house? Hunk is that friend.

To start, he’s really a pretty chill dude--even if he does tend to run on the more nervous side. If something isn’t sitting well with him or it looks like things could go wrong, he will be the first to say something about it. And then keep saying something. All the things. He will word vomit about how terrible an idea this is, no really, guys, come on let’s not provoke the hostile alien species, we’ve talked about this.

He’s often the most genuinely concerned about the well being of himself and his friends. However, it’s not really all that hard to get in on his friendship circle. While it did take him a little bit, initially, to get totally on board with the whole fighting an alien war thing, he came around quickly enough after seeing firsthand the kinds of things that the Galra were doing. He also continues to express concern even when his team has moved on to other parts of the universe. It’s not just life or death concern, either. As we see from his brief stint as the head chef in a space mall food court, he also strives to make sure people are happy in small ways, too.

That said, he doesn’t always immediately pick up on when he’s doing something that might not be super cool with someone else. Like he’s totally cool just rifling through Pidge’s stuff and never seems to get that maybe, just maybe, she would rather he not go looking around in her stuff and sharing her personal belongings with the rest of the crew. Or after learning about Keith being part Galra and starting up a long line of questioning about the differences in “Galra Keith.” It’s pretty clear that he’s not intentionally being a dick about it, but still. It’s kind of a dick move anyway.

He also has a bit of a tendency towards the “I told you so.” The same way he’ll be the first to bring up how something could go terribly wrong, he will also feel more than free to tell you all about how he totally knew it was gonna go down like that when things do turn out for the worst. He definitely trusts his gut--churning and upset as it often is--and is honestly pretty offended that you aren’t also trusting it, gosh.

He is also pretty goal oriented, and can be a bit bullheaded when it comes to achieving that goal. It’s not the same kind of single-minded focus that some of his teammates can get, but he also won’t let something get pushed to the wayside.

Has it been mentioned that he talks a lot? Because he totally does. Hunk is the type of guy that always has something to say. No matter whether it’s to pipe in his two cents on a plan, place his complaints on the official record, talk at length in a bunch of science words that only Pidge (and sometimes Coran) understands, or just fill space with random chatter, Hunk will go on and on about it..

So basically the coolest dude on the team, obviously.

Skills/Abilities: Science! So Hunk is a smart dude. He’s got a pretty varied amount of knowledge in various and sundry scientific fields, able to easily converse in anything from chemistry to physics.

Mechanical Engineering! All the above said, he does have more of a penchant for the more tactile side of said science. He can very quickly take an idea and translate that into some sort of machine to solve the gang’s problem of the day. From building little devices to jury-rigging the castleship’s wiring to make a Galra finder, he’s your guy!

Culinary Arts! Even if the recipe isn’t in English (or anything remotely Earth-ish), count on Hunk to be able to follow it anyway. Or just watch him wing it. Sure, the paladins most dine on the tried and true staple of food goo, but if you give him some actual organic ingredients, he can whip up some wondrous things.

Nausea! Now, you may be thinking that everybody gets nausea from time to time. Nothing special, right? Well, my friend, that is where you are wrong. The sheer amount of things that can make Hunk throw up is truly awe inspiring.

Sweet Gains! So you might be saying to yourself, “man there sure is a lot of Hunk to love.” And you’d be right! He’s a pretty big guy, but a lot of that is muscle. Just scope out the giant cannon he carries around like it’s no big deal. He’s not the most skilled at hand to hand combat, so having the strength to knock somebody out quick really works to Hunk’s advantage.

Paladin Stuff! Hunk was in no way trying to be a pilot when he went off to the Garrison, but somehow still managed to do just that. As the Yellow Paladin of Voltron, Hunk gets to fly around doing cool junk in a giant cat robot. While he may not be as technically skilled as some of his teammates, he is definitely a pro at being the go to defense guy. He also gets a super sweet bayard. For those not in the know: bayards are devices that can change what type of weapon they are depending on who is using them. For Hunk, that translates out to getting a portable cannon.
